
Most people choose floor tiles with their eyes. Color, pattern, format, done. The problem is that two tiles that look identical on a showroom wall can perform completely differently underfoot over ten years. The information that predicts durability is printed right on the box, in a handful of ratings that almost nobody reads. Learn to read them and you stop guessing.
The PEI rating: how much abuse the surface can take
Start with the PEI rating, a scale from 1 to 5 that measures surface wear resistance. It tells you how well the glaze holds up against foot traffic and abrasion. A PEI 1 tile is rated for walls only, where nothing walks on it. A PEI 5 is built for heavy commercial floors that see thousands of footsteps a day.
For a residential floor, the sweet spot is usually PEI 3 or 4. A PEI 3 handles normal household traffic in bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas. A PEI 4 adds a margin for busy entrances, kitchens, and homes with pets or kids. Matching the rating to the room matters, because installing a wall-rated tile on a floor guarantees premature wear no matter how beautiful it looked at purchase. Any competent ceramic floor supplier will list the PEI rating on each product, and if it is missing, that absence is itself a warning.
Water absorption: the number that matters in Quebec
Here is a spec that gets ignored and shouldn’t, especially in a climate with freeze-thaw cycles. Water absorption measures how porous the tile body is, expressed as a percentage of weight. It sorts tiles into categories: non-vitreous and semi-vitreous tiles absorb more water, while vitreous and impervious tiles absorb almost none.
Why does this matter so much here? Because water that soaks into a porous tile can freeze, expand, and crack the body from the inside. For any surface exposed to moisture and temperature swings, an entrance, a mudroom, an unheated area, you want a low-absorption tile, ideally porcelain rated impervious at under 0.5 percent. Indoors, in a heated bathroom, a slightly higher absorption is tolerable. But the general rule holds: the wetter and colder the location, the lower the absorption number should be.

Porcelain is a type of ceramic fired at higher temperatures with denser clay, which is exactly what gives it that very low absorption and higher density. It is harder, more resistant to moisture, and generally better suited to floors and demanding environments.
Standard ceramic is not inferior across the board. It is easier to cut, often cheaper, and perfectly suited to walls and light-traffic residential floors. The mistake is treating them as interchangeable. For a bathroom floor that gets wet daily, porcelain earns its slightly higher price. For a decorative wall or a low-traffic powder room, standard ceramic does the job without overspending. The spec sheet tells you which is which, regardless of what the tile is called on the display.
Slip resistance and the COF number
Underrated until someone slips. Slip resistance is measured by a coefficient of friction, and it becomes critical wherever water meets a floor. A gorgeous polished tile can turn into a hazard in a wet bathroom or entryway. Manufacturers publish a COF value, and for wet areas you want a higher figure, often achieved through a textured or matte finish rather than a high-gloss surface.
There is a design trade-off buried here. The glossier and smoother the tile, the more slippery it tends to be when wet, and the more it shows every water spot. A matte or lightly textured floor grips better and hides marks, but it can be marginally harder to keep looking pristine. Choosing the finish is really about weighing safety and maintenance against shine.

Format and size change how the numbers behave
The ratings tell you about the tile itself, but the size you choose interacts with them in ways worth understanding. Large-format tiles have become popular because they create fewer grout lines and a cleaner look. They also demand a flatter subfloor, since a big rigid tile cannot follow a dip the way a small one can. Installed over an uneven surface, a large tile is prone to lippage or even cracking under point loads, regardless of how strong its rating is.
Smaller tiles and mosaics forgive an imperfect substrate, but they multiply grout lines, which changes the maintenance equation. More grout means more sealing and more cleaning over the years. Neither is better in the abstract. A large-format floor rewards good subfloor prep with a sleek, low-maintenance result, while a smaller format buys flexibility on a surface that is hard to get perfectly flat.
Thickness matters as well, particularly for floors that will carry weight or see heavy traffic. A thicker tile body resists cracking better under stress. This is why floor tiles are generally thicker than wall tiles, and why using a thin wall tile on a floor is a mistake no rating can rescue. When you read the specs, read the dimensions alongside them. A tile’s performance is a partnership between its ratings and the format you install, and treating those as separate decisions is how good tile ends up failing in the wrong application.
Putting the numbers together
None of these ratings works in isolation. A tile is right for a room only when the full set of specs lines up with how that room is used. A high-traffic entrance in a cold climate wants high PEI, very low water absorption, and strong slip resistance all at once. A quiet interior wall can relax all three. The specs are a system, and reading them together is what prevents a costly mismatch.
Before you commit, ask for the technical data sheet and check the PEI rating, the water absorption percentage, and the slip resistance for the exact tile you want, in the exact room you plan to use it. It takes two minutes and it removes almost all the risk from the decision.
Beautiful tile that fails in three years is expensive twice, once to buy and once to replace. Tile chosen to match its ratings to its room lasts decades and looks the same at the end as it did on day one. The difference is not the price or the pattern. It is whether anyone bothered to read the numbers before buying.
None of this requires becoming an expert. It requires asking for one document, the technical data sheet, and spending two minutes reading three numbers on it. That small habit puts you ahead of the vast majority of buyers who choose on appearance alone and hope for the best. The tile that looks good and carries the right ratings for its room is the one you will still be happy with a decade from now.
